The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is an educational organization that provides education through open and distance learning modes as well as administers examinations for the award of certificates up to the pre-degree level on par with other National Boards such as the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE).

 Anyone who has completed class VIII and has proper proof of achieving the age of 14 can apply for enrollment in a Secondary Course. Admission to the Secondary course is also possible with a self-certificate stating, "I have studied enough to be able to study Secondary course."
